Alabama Executive Orders Ease Vehicle and Fuel Taxes in Reponses to Hurricane Ida
The Alabama Department of Revenue issued three executive orders to ease the availability of automobile fuel after Hurricane Ida.
Suspension of Terminal Excise Tax for Motor Vehicles: An order issued on August 30, 2021 temporarily suspends licensing requirements associated with the Alabama Terminal Excise Tax for exporters, importers, or transporters supporting disaster relief efforts by exporting, importing, or transporting motor fuel. The suspension lasts until September 29, 2021.
Suspension of IRP and IFTA: A second order on August 30, 2021 temporary suspends the International Registration Plan (IRP) and International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) requirements for any motor vehicle engaged in interstate disaster relief efforts that will be traveling through Alabama as part of the disaster relief. The suspension also lasts until September 29, 2021.
Suspension of Vehicle Registration and Property Tax: An order on September 1, 2021 extends the time for taxpayers to register and pay property taxes on motor vehicles in counties where the relevant county office was closed due to Hurricane Ida. The order extended the deadline to the last business day of the following month that the registration and tax was otherwise due. This applies to property taxes related to the registration of vehicles that are subject to the state’s 20-day registration requirement as well as to registration and property tax laws related to motor vehicle registrations pursuant to the International Registration Plan (IRP).
